The records include the administrative files of laboratory directors, Roswell W. Austin and Seibert Quimby Duntley. Records include contract and grant files, manuscripts of scientific publications, personnel files, subject files, photographs and other records documenting the work of the lab and scientists (J. L. Harris, John E. Tyler, Seibert Q. Duntley) associated with the lab. The bulk of the material in this collection documents the period 1952 through 1987, when the Visibility Labortory was associated with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The Visibility Laboratory originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1939. Its mission was to apply optics to problems of camouflage and misdirection with respect to an anticipated aerial bombardment of Boston, and its early work was supported by the WPA.
